The Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Cape Town seeks to appoint a Research Officer / Senior Research Officer to further the social scientific study of Jews in South Africa.

Since its founding in 1979, the Centre has conducted a variety of sociological, demographic, and attitudinal studies. These include national studies of the South African Jewish population in 1991, 1998, 2005, and 2019; a national opinion survey in 2016; an intensive community study focused on Cape Town in 2018/9; a programme of oral history interviews; and a current project to track and quantify racism and antisemitism on social media in South Africa. The appointee will be expected to lead and develop this programme of research going forward.

The post is on the standard academic track, qualifies for ad hominem promotion, and is permanent subject to the availability of funding. It is hoped that the successful candidate will commence duties by January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Requirements for the job:

• A Master’s degree in sociology, demography, or a cognate discipline for appointment Research Officer level.
• A PhD in in sociology, demography, or a cognate discipline for appointment at Senior Research Officer level.
• Strong record of research involving the application of survey methodology, data analysis, and other quantitative and qualitative methods.
• strong record of study of religious and ethnic populations.
• Experience in research management and administration.

Responsibilities:

The appointee will be responsible for, inter alia, designing, coordinating, and managing all social scientific projects undertaken by the Centre. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a productive record of scholarship and publication, and to participate fully in the intellectual life of Centre and in the broader field of Jewish Studies.
