VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

TAHA, an apex private sector member-based organization mandated to develop and promote horticultural value chain (flowers, fruits, vegetables, spices, herbs and horticultural seeds) in Tanzania. TAHA is seeking for a highly motivated and experienced Tanzanian to fill the position as described below.

Position: Regional Agronomist
Report to: Production Lead
Duty Station: Coastal Region (1)


Job Overview

The Regional Agronomist will play a key role in supporting farmers to enhance extension services and adopt improved production techniques that increase crop yields. The role will involve providing practical solutions to crop production challenges, conducting research, and promoting climate-smart agricultural strategies to address the effects of climate change on soils, pests, and diseases. In addition, the Regional Agronomist will actively contribute to product marketing and the promotion of sustainable farming practices.


Scope of the Work

1. Production

  • Mobilize farmers into formal groups/associations and register them with TAHA.
  • Establish crop cluster for GAP training, agro dealers and market linkages.
  • Set up demonstrations on farming practices, improved production technologies, harvesting and post–harvest techniques.
  • Establish and manage farmers’ collection and distribution centers to operate commercially and sustainably.
  • Introduce innovative horticultural practices and empower farmers with technical skills through business-oriented extension services.
  • Prepare and coordinate technical training programs, farmer field days, workshops, exchange visits and networking events.
  • Identify new methods, develop training materials and technologies in irrigation, harvesting, processing, storage, cooling and transportation.
  • Conduct periodic farmer surveys to identify constraints and develop solutions.
  • Maintain relations with TAHA, LGAs and partners.
  • Coordinate the entire value chain (seedling availability, agro-inputs, packaging, buyers, post-harvest facilities).

2. Market Access

  • Identify market opportunities locally, regionally & internationally.
  • Develop and implement sustainable market linkages.
  • Align demand and supply requirements.
  • Create market opportunities for small producers.
  • Assess farmers’ and SMEs’ business capacity and propose solutions.
  • Coordinate interactive sessions between farmers, traders and actors.
  • Work with TAHA departments to address marketing challenges.
  • Engage relevant horticultural partners.
  • Support business model development for collection centers.

3. Partnerships

  • Identify and coordinate partners, align resources for greater impact.

4. Reports Development

  • Prepare and submit quality reports in collaboration with Programs and M&E.

5. TAHA Representation

  • Represent TAHA in events related to production, technology and innovation.

6. Other Duties

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture, Applied Agricultural Extension or Crop Production & Management.
  • Minimum of 5 years of agricultural development experience, focused on horticulture and crop production.
  • Proficiency in modern agricultural techniques: GAP, irrigation, harvesting, post-harvest management.
  • Strong understanding of innovative and sustainable horticultural practices.
  • Experience managing farmer groups, collection & distribution centers.
  • Familiarity with market analysis and marketing strategies.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, technical and analytical skills.
