Business Growth and Development Manager
Basic Purpose
The Business Growth and Development Manager will provide leadership to achieve high performance by ensuring employee development, employee engagement, and performance management to deliver organizational objectives and goals. The role focuses on growing the company’s market share by identifying new markets and creating unique customer products/services intimacy experiences. It also involves intelligence gathering on customers, competitors, and market trends through research, as well as formulating and implementing business development strategies and marketing plans.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for business development and marketing activities for overall business growth (on deposit, alternative banking channels, and quality loan portfolio).
- Assessing key markets and business opportunities for the bank’s products and services.
- Formulating and implementing business development strategies and marketing plans.
- Intelligence gathering on customers, competitors, and market trends through research.
- Handling business inquiries and generating leads for possible sales, follow-up sales activity, and proposal writing.
- Developing new revenue streams while optimizing income from existing lines through innovative marketing and rapid exploitation of changing customer needs and tastes (to grow profitability for the bank).
- Growing the company’s market share by identifying new markets and creating unique customer products/services intimacy experiences.
- Growing the number of accounts, carded customers, agents, and merchants.
- Managing and monitoring branch budget.
- Monitoring the existing business portfolio and new accounts performance.
- Providing leadership to achieve high performance by ensuring employee development, employee engagement, and performance management to deliver organizational objectives and goals.
- Fostering partnerships and maintaining business relations with key industry players.
- Working with other departments on product/service enhancement and development to ensure customers are delighted.
- Any other duty as assigned by the supervisor in line with the job description.

Work Experience:

Relationship Manager – Business
Basic Purpose
The Relationship Manager – Business will provide a supervisory role to staff members in the branch business development unit. The role involves coordinating unit activities by leading the team on sales and business development to ensure growth of the customer base, CASA and term deposits, high-quality loan NPL, improvement of loan portfolio (both PAR 30% and PAR 90%), growth of non-funded income (NFIs), cross-selling of bank products, and maintaining good client relationships in line with key performance indicators (KPIs).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Identifying and negotiating business opportunities to grow branch business in line with annual business targets and bank strategy.
- Developing and implementing an annual business plan and sales strategy to contribute to the overall branch and bank strategy.
- Ensuring growth of CASA deposits, contributing to 70% of total branch deposits.
- Ensuring growth of a quality loan portfolio across all customer segments and business sectors to generate profit in line with business targets.
- Ensuring growth of the customer base and active operation of their bank accounts.
- Ensuring recruitment of Equity Agents and Super Agents in line with branch targets and growth of transaction numbers.
- Recruiting merchants and monitoring performances of all POS in the area to ensure attainment of unit targets in line with branch objectives and goals.
- Ensuring customers are onboarded on ABC platforms and growth of transaction numbers to reduce branch traffic and grow NFIs.
- Ensuring growth in NFIs by cross-selling trade finance products, increasing transactional banking services, insurance, and other products and services that generate NFIs.
- Cross-selling bank products and ensuring product usage per customer is enhanced to at least 8 products per customer.
- Ensuring the number of dormant accounts is reduced to a minimum, at least 15% of total branch customers.
- Managing and enhancing existing business relationships within the portfolio to ensure customer retention in line with business needs.
- Reviewing own and other loan portfolios and recommending interventions to ensure performance in line with approved performance indicators and targets.
- Liaising with stakeholders (e.g., clients, government institutions, other financial institutions) to ensure the bank’s interests are represented and safeguarded.
- Supervising, guiding, and mentoring Relationship Officers to ensure onboarding of quality business and adherence to bank policies, including KYC and anti-money laundering policies.
- Meeting and interacting with segmented clients to build confidence in new ventures and maintain loyalty.
- Providing timely reports, recommendations, and feedback to supervisors and top management on business developments and progress.
- Liaising and coordinating activities with the Commercial Department and other stakeholders at Head Office.
- Advising the Business Growth and Development Manager (BGDM) on branch matters concerning business growth and people management.
- Participating in the preparation of the branch budget and annual plan.
- Carrying out any other related duties as assigned by the BGDM relevant to the bank’s business.
- Collecting and preparing market intelligence information on corporate and retail products and services to ensure business growth in line with branch goals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Skills:
- Demonstrated understanding of the bank’s major product offerings, including syndication, co-financing, club deals, correspondent banking products (letters of credit, factoring, forfaiting), structured trade finance, carbon financing, corporate finance risk participations, project-related financing, and knowledge of how these work.
- Demonstrated understanding and experience of the structured trade finance operating model for mitigating risks in potential business transactions, especially in credit risk management and monitoring.
- Ability to communicate and function in a culturally diverse and change-oriented setting with knowledge of trade finance markets and participants in major regions of Africa.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of the bank’s other working languages is an added advantage.
- Proven experience in marketing trade and project finance products is a distinct advantage.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work long hours where required to achieve the bank’s objectives.
Work Experience:
- At least 3 years of experience in banking and familiarity with the bank’s major business development channels in trade finance, project finance, export development, and asset financing.
- Proven track record in portfolio management, business development, and client acquisition.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Financial Planner, Credit Analyst) are a plus.
- Formal credit training is highly valued.
Regulatory Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of banking regulations, compliance standards, and risk management.
- Familiarity with KYC, AML, and credit policies.
