Senior Data Scientist (1 Position)

Job Purpose

The Senior Data Scientist will work under the Data Science sub-unit within the Innovation Department, leading the implementation of NMB’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) strategy. The role will leverage advanced analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, and programming to derive insights and design intelligent solutions that strengthen business performance and enhance decision-making across the bank.

Main Responsibilities

1. Strategic Planning

• Apply data science techniques to analyze and interpret large volumes of data.
• Drive the use of data for personalization, behavioral incentives, risk controls, and proactive fraud detection.
• Promote the use of advanced analytics and intelligent algorithms across banking operations.
• Identify opportunities to build innovative and transformative data-driven solutions.

2. Data Modelling

• Implement modern deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and MXNet.
• Provide guidance on machine learning algorithms to uncover deep patterns and insights.
• Apply fundamental theories and principles of machine learning in practical applications.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to broaden understanding of data science concepts.
• Execute end-to-end data science workflows including:
  • Problem formulation
  • Data collection & preprocessing
  • Exploratory data analysis
  • Model selection, training, evaluation & deployment
  • Interpretability, monitoring & updates
• Develop internal models such as ML models, numerical optimization systems, significance testing, ML-as-a-service APIs, and event data processing pipelines.
• Ensure AI/ML solutions adhere to ethical and socially responsible principles.

3. Data Platforms

• Recommend system solutions, modeling approaches, and risk considerations for diverse business problems.
• Implement advanced data platforms, including Data Lakes for handling unstructured and semi-structured data.
• Develop real-time analytics capabilities to support personalized user experiences.
• Build and maintain data visualization tools for translating complex data into clear insights.
• Research distributed architectures that decouple software from hardware for scalable data processing.
• Explore AI platforms that enable the development, training, and deployment of ML models for use by cross-functional teams.

Knowledge and Skills

• Proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Python, R.
• Knowledge of BI & Data Warehousing.
• Strong grasp of Machine Learning techniques.
• Experience with Big Data platforms.
• Strong mathematical and numeracy skills.
• Understanding of reporting and data visualization tools.
• Knowledge of ETL frameworks and tools.
• Strong analytical, creative, and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, able to work under pressure.
• Highly data-oriented personality.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
• At least 4 years of experience as a Data Scientist.
• Experience working with big data tools such as Hadoop, Pig, Hive, Spark, MapReduce.
• Proficiency in SQL, Python, Scala, Perl, and R.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Strong background in data mining, machine learning algorithms, and practical implementation.
• Proven experience handling and analyzing large datasets.
• Experience in the financial services sector (especially banking) is an added advantage.
