1. Context and Environment

The General Trade (GT) market in Tanzania is highly competitive at both consumer and reseller levels, characterized by the following aspects:

1.1 Market Dynamics

  • Consumers demand high-quality products, robust onsite services, and continuous improvement programs.
  • Pricing pressure driven by EWURA-regulated discounted price levels.
  • Major consumers maintain long-term relationships with existing suppliers.
  • Reseller market steadily growing and dominated by independents.

1.2 Sector Presence

  • Strong customer base in Construction, Beverages, Cement, and Sugar sectors.
  • Growth potential in Mining, Manufacturing, Oil & Gas, Construction, and Telecommunication.

1.3 Operational Challenges

  • Reluctance among major consumers to provide cover/guarantees for trade debts.
  • GT activities require close coordination with multiple departments:
    • Finance: order processing, funds confirmation
    • Operations: loading, transport, equipment installation & maintenance
    • Network: Cards management
    • Specialties: consolidated fuel and lubricant supply
    • HR: recruitment and training support

2. Key Responsibilities

2.1 Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement a GT organizational structure based on sectoral segmentation.
  • Lead the GT team in preparing annual, monthly, and weekly action plans aligned with BU 2020 objectives.
  • Build and apply client retention, prospection, and penetration strategies for GT consumers and resellers.

2.2 Business Development & Market Penetration

  • Protect established clients in strong segments and identify penetration opportunities in emerging sectors.
  • Coordinate GT tender activities: procurement, proposal preparation, contract negotiations, and post-tender activities.
  • Implement GT client-centricity framework to deepen understanding of customer needs and improve satisfaction.

2.3 Operational Execution

  • Oversee the delivery of contractual obligations in coordination with Finance, Operations, and other departments.
  • Monitor sales volume, margins, and risk levels to identify improvement levers for achieving BU 2020 targets.
  • Ensure effective implementation of price, margin, and credit controls using approved tools (daily reports, pricing sessions, credit limit reviews).

2.4 Risk & Performance Management

  • Develop and champion a systematic risk-and-reward assessment approach within the GT team.
  • Generate key business reports and performance indicators, including SALSA usage, prospection metrics, and account contribution analyses.
  • Ensure proper execution and compliance with GT procedures.

2.5 Customer Relationship Management

  • Lead quarterly business review meetings with major customers.
  • Directly oversee collection efforts for key accounts, especially top 10 clients.
  • Collaborate with the legal department on matters requiring legal resolution.
  • Coordinate investigation and resolution of customer complaints to ensure timely corrective action.

2.6 People Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, train, and develop GT team members and assistants, using both on-the-job and Group training programs.
  • Promote TotalEnergies values and drive adoption of the variable compensation scheme.
  • Build a strong, motivated, and performance-driven GT team culture.

2.7 Cross-Functional Engagement

  • Contribute to the development and execution of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with Logistics, Equipment Maintenance, and Customer Service functions.
  • Participate in management committee meetings and ensure execution of MANCOM directives.
  • Support company-wide crisis management, HSEQ initiatives, and related governance processes.

2.8 Digitalization & Tools Deployment

  • Lead implementation of new operational tools for GT, including:
    • Where Is My Truck (WIMT)
    • Mobile tank deployments
    • Excellium
    • Consignment management systems
    • Fuel management systems

3. Candidate Profile

3.1 Qualifications

  • Degree or Master’s in Engineering, Marketing, Economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience, including at least 3 years in management roles.

3.2 Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical capability and proactive business mindset.
  • Demonstrated leadership, negotiation, and team-management skills.
  • Excellent understanding of corporate sales, especially in General Trade.
  • Advanced computer proficiency.
  • Possession of a valid and clean driving license.
