Job Title: Accountant
Report to: Operations Manager.
Salary: Dependent upon skills and experience
Location: Arusha.

The Position Description:

The key responsibilities of the accountant include supports the finance department and management team by completing routine accounting tasks including preparing budgets, maintaining reports and completing basic data entry, bookkeeping and accounting duties.

To be successful in this role, the applicant must have excellent communication skills, speak fluently in Maasai, Swahili and English, be highly organized, and have a strong attention to detail. He/she must have excellent reporting and analytical skills, have good time management skills and be deadline oriented. Applicant must be prepared to support extensive data entry activities including oversight of systems data entered by others. Additionally, he/she must be able to work unsupervised and maintain strict confidentiality. The applicant must ensure complete and accurate data preparation and presentation, and collaborate with others in the team, through positive feedback, training, and mentoring.

Accountant Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain an up-to-date register of company assets.
  2. Supervise the entry of data in the credit system by the data clerk ensuring the accuracy of entered data before posting it.
  3. Supervise the retrieval of data from the system by the Administrative Assistant and issue weekly portfolio reports to the supervisor every Monday morning.
  4. Prepare monthly payroll and submit it to the supervisor for verification by the 22nd day of the month.
  5. Handle statutory deductions and tax payments while observing the stipulated deadline dates of payment. These include PAYE, Workers’ Compensation, NSSF, withholding tax, etc.
  6. Summarize current financial status by collecting information from the System and preparing a balance sheet, cash flow statement, income statement, and other reports.
  7. Support Operations Manager in preparation of monthly / quarterly / annual KPI reports to share across the organisation.
  8. Prepare quarterly and annual management reports for reporting to the board.
  9. Pay account payables by verifying documentation.
  10. Process disbursement of loans by verifying documentation including loan application form, credit committee minutes, loan contract and offer letter duly signed by the borrower.
  11. Maintain customer confidence and protect operations by keeping financial information confidential.
  12. Conduct bank reconciliation on a weekly basis and submit the reconciliation report to the supervisor the same day by 10 am (every Monday).
  13. Prepare the accounts for internal and external audits on a timely basis.
  14. Attend credit committee meetings.
  15. Ensure up-to-date filing of all accounting documents.
  16. Supervise Accounting Assistant to ensure optimal effectiveness of EML financial team.
  17. Perform any other duties appropriately assigned by the supervisor.

    Experience and Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma in accounting with at least five years of experience in a similar position within a business or social enterprise.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel.
  • Extensive use of Quickbooks or an equivalent financial management system.
