Job Purpose

The position is responsible for establishing, implementing, and overseeing the Bank’s AI governance frameworks and model risk management practices. The role ensures that all AI and Machine Learning (ML) models are developed, deployed, and monitored in compliance with regulatory, ethical, and organizational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Develop, implement, and maintain the AI Governance Framework and Model Risk Management Framework in alignment with the Bank’s strategic objectives and regulatory mandates.
2. Ensure that all AI and ML models meet transparency, explainability, fairness, robustness, and compliance standards throughout the model lifecycle.
3. Oversee model validation, approval, and monitoring processes to ensure adherence to governance protocols and regulatory expectations.
4. Lead periodic model risk assessments to identify, measure, and mitigate risks associated with AI and ML models.
5. Collaborate with the Data Governance Council, Risk Management, and Compliance units to integrate AI governance across enterprise governance structures.
6. Define and monitor Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for AI models and governance activities.
7. Drive training, awareness, and organizational accountability for responsible and ethical AI adoption.
8. Establish and maintain audit trails and documentation standards for all AI and ML models to support internal audits and regulatory examinations.
9. Ensure full alignment with the Tanzania Data Protection Act, Bank of Tanzania Guidelines, and CRDB’s internal model governance policies and AI standards.
10. Serve as the subject matter expert on AI ethics, regulatory compliance, and model risk controls, providing advisory support on emerging governance trends and risks.

Qualifications Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Risk Management, Statistics, or a related field; a master’s degree is an added advantage.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in model governance, AI/ML model risk management, or data governance within financial services or any regulated sector.
• Proven experience in establishing or managing AI or model risk frameworks.
• Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks including Bank of Tanzania guidelines, the Data Protection Act, and global AI governance standards.
• Experience with AI/ML development environments and version control tools.
• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and foster responsible and ethical AI practices.
• Knowledge of the AI lifecycle (development, validation, deployment, and monitoring).
• Practical experience in model risk management and model validation methodologies.
• Proficiency in Python, R, or Java.
• Knowledge of data governance and data quality management principles.
• Strong ethical judgment, strategic risk-based decision-making, and analytical thinking abilities.
• Change management capabilities and strong organizational awareness.
• Ability to translate technical concepts into governance, risk, and policy-oriented language.
