Job Title: Senior Manager; Credit Assessment (1 Position)

Location: Head Office


Job Purpose:

The Senior Manager; Credit Assessment is responsible for leading the Retail Credit Assessment team through effective management, assessment, administration, monitoring, and reporting of the Bank’s credit risk. The role ensures the sustainable profitability of the Bank by originating and maintaining a high-quality retail credit portfolio that aligns with the Bank’s strategic objectives.


Main Responsibilities:

Credit Management and Risk Assessment

  • Manage Retail Credit personnel to assess business and financial risks in credit applications through effective review, analysis, and approval or rejection of proposals.
  • Lead and drive team performance in credit assessment and approvals, ensuring quality control and compliance with internal standards.
  • Ensure the highest standards of credit quality through consistent application of best practices, sampling, and assessments.
  • Advise the Head; Retail Credit on potential or actual shifts in borrower or sector risk profiles and recommend appropriate mitigation or remedial actions.
  • Analyze and manage credit risk assessments for counterparties, including individuals, financial institutions, non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), corporates, and sovereign entities.
  • Participate in Credit Committees, Watchlist Committees, and Board Credit Committees as required.

Portfolio Oversight and Performance Monitoring

  • Collaborate with front-office teams to identify and mitigate credit risks at early stages, ensuring proper structuring to protect the Bank against potential losses.
  • Work closely with the Head; Retail Credit, Zonal Managers, and Branch Managers to streamline operations and recommend risk-reducing process improvements.
  • Oversee the flow of credit-related information within the Bank and ensure accurate, timely reporting to management.
  • Support risk aggregation, management, and proactive monitoring to enhance portfolio performance.
  • Engage in proactive management of IFRS 9 impairments by closely monitoring key metrics such as PAR, NPL, and ECL (general and specific).

Leadership and Team Development

  • Build, develop, and lead a high-performing team through coaching, guidance, and empowerment.
  • Serve as a role model for professional behavior, leadership, and ethical standards.
  • Ensure staff understand their roles in relation to departmental and organizational strategy.
  • Manage staff performance, including setting objectives, reviewing progress, and conducting appraisals.
  • Implement the Bank’s performance management framework within the department.

Credit Policy and Compliance

  • Develop and maintain internal credit assessment models and methodologies for quantifying product-related credit risks.
  • Manage the Bank’s credit risk policies and ensure compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead credit audit assignments related to the Bank’s retail portfolio and ensure prompt resolution of audit findings.
  • Ensure oversight and full compliance with consumer protection standards across business units.
  • Engage with MI and Credit Reporting teams to address data quality, CRB submissions, and audit-related action items.
  • Support credit system developments, ensuring functionality testing and process optimization.

Analytical and Strategic Contribution

  • Develop models for measuring Value at Risk (VaR), including default probability, loss given default, and rating migration.
  • Prepare and present credit approval packs or requests to Credit Committees and support pricing reviews to maximize value.
  • Work with Special Asset Management (SAM) to analyze lessons learned from distressed assets and implement preventive measures to enhance portfolio quality.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of retail and wholesale credit management, asset management, and business law.
  • Technical expertise in structured transactions and risk modeling.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills with the ability to drive change and performance.
  • Strong adaptability, coaching, delegation, and performance management abilities.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Banking, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Law, Economics, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in business studies is an added advantage.
  • Postgraduate education or certification in Banking and Credit Management is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Credit Management (preferably Retail), with leadership experience in medium to large organizations.
