Main Responsibilities

A. Business and Operational Delivery

  1. Support the Head of Legal in ensuring effective and efficient management of the Litigation and Strategic Engagements Unit.
  2. Prepare court documents and represent the Bank in courts of law.
  3. Manage and monitor all litigation cases and stakeholder engagements.
  4. Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including the Judiciary, Solicitor General’s Office, National Prosecutions Services, Land Registries, and Law Enforcement Agencies.
  5. Ensure quarterly contingent liability reporting complies with the Bank’s approved framework.
  6. Ensure the case management system is in place and operates according to industry best standards.
  7. Collaborate with the Head of Legal to ensure proper attendance to law-enforcement-related matters and provide appropriate advisory to senior management.
  8. Coordinate reporting of criminal matters to law enforcement agencies in consultation with the Head of Legal.
  9. Liaise with the Director of Public Prosecutions and follow up on court proceedings for criminal cases of interest to the Bank.
  10. Promptly report any litigation matter with potential financial or reputational risk, including major fines and penalties, to senior management.
  11. Ensure all public statements or media responses regarding litigation are approved by the Head of Legal.
  12. Ensure all court documents, agency notices, and law enforcement requests received at branches or head office are promptly attended to.
  13. Oversee litigation processes handled by both internal and external legal counsel.
  14. Provide legal guidance to departments and ensure resolution of all case-related queries and orders.
  15. Maintain the Bank’s list of internal and external counsel handling litigation matters.
  16. Provide legal advisory services on all case-related issues affecting the Bank.

B. People Management

  1. Build and develop a high-performing team through mentoring, coaching, and on-the-job training.
  2. Oversee resource planning, succession management, and training needs assessment.
  3. Act as an escalation point for unresolved queries and ensure timely resolution.
  4. Drive continuous improvement in legal processes, systems, and reporting standards.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks in Tanzania.
  • Proficiency in standard computer applications.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Quick learner with the ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Change management capabilities and ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university.
  • Master’s degree in Law is an added advantage.
  • Must be enrolled and practicing as an Advocate.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a legal environment.
  • Proven leadership experience.
