Specialist: Operational Risk

Job Purpose

The Specialist, Operational Risk, is responsible for supporting and driving the implementation of a robust Operational Risk Management Framework across branches within the zone. The role ensures strong internal controls, effective risk processes, and proper oversight are in place to align with the Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework.


Main Responsibilities

Risk Assessment, Analysis & Reporting

  • Ensure branches conduct Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs) in line with Operational Risk guidelines.
  • Support periodic control testing and independent assurance reviews to validate control effectiveness.
  • Facilitate risk management training and awareness sessions for branch teams covering standards, policies, incident reporting, and control ownership.
  • Monitor the implementation of risk mitigation actions and escalate delays or deviations to the Risk and Compliance Committee (RCC).
  • Capture and track all governance and risk issues using Teammate or other designated Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) systems.
  • Conduct thematic reviews and trend analysis of recurring risk issues, recommending corrective actions for systemic control weaknesses.
  • Spearhead zonal risk management training and capability-building initiatives.
  • Ensure timely reporting of all risk events through the GCM system, including performing quality assurance on data accuracy and adherence to reporting standards.
  • Oversee closure of incidents and remedial actions within agreed timelines on the GCM system.
  • Support implementation and tracking of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) at branch level.
  • Consolidate zonal operational risk reports (RCSA, KRI, Incident Management) for governance committees such as RCC, EXCO, and MARCC.
  • Keep Zonal and Branch Managers informed on operational deficiencies and status of corrective actions.
  • Provide ongoing advisory support on operational risk matters, emerging risks, and policy interpretation.
  • Conduct risk assessments for new or significant branch projects and business initiatives.
  • Perform physical security assessments to ensure compliance with established standards, reporting results to relevant forums.
  • Safeguard the bank against financial and non-financial losses by ensuring branch controls are well-defined and effectively implemented.
  • Participate in zone meetings to drive risk awareness and communicate new initiatives.
  • Track and report reputational risk triggers such as customer complaints, staff conduct issues, and negative media mentions.
  • Identify and report product-related risks, including frequent reversals, transaction errors, or manual workarounds indicating control weaknesses.
  • Support periodic product risk reviews and resolution of repeat or high-risk customer complaints through root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
  • Maintain a log of emerging risks at branch and zonal levels.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of retail and commercial banking operations.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, reporting, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Practical knowledge of risk management tools, control frameworks, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with core banking operational processes and control structures.
  • Excellent facilitation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Technical skills in risk assessment, control design, and mitigation planning.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and collaboration abilities.
  • Effective time management and the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Studies, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Master’s degree in Business Studies will be an added advantage.
  • Professional banking or risk certification(s) are an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Risk Management, Audit, or related banking functions.
  • Prior experience in auditing, operational risk, or compliance roles preferred.
