Position Summary 

Ifakara Health Institute seeks a Research Officer who will contribute to field and laboratory research aimed at understanding, measuring, and exploiting vulnerabilities in dominant malaria vector species to achieve significant population suppression or local elimination in targeted areas. The role involves designing and conducting studies, analyzing data, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical strategies for vector control.

Duties and Responsibilities

Research Officer is expected to perform the following duties:

  • Investigate environmental, ecological, and operational factors enabling suppression or elimination of malaria vector populations.
  • Develop and validate tools for measuring mosquito populations from high to critically low densities.
  • Identify and target vulnerabilities across mosquito life stages for control interventions.
  • Test and adapt elimination strategies for different ecological and operational contexts.
  • Manage, analyze, and interpret field and laboratory data.
  • Produce reports, manuscripts, and policy briefs, and present findings to scientific and stakeholder audiences.

Qualification and Experience

    • Bachelors in Entomology, Biology, Environmental Health, Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences. Epidemiology, or a related field.
    • At least 2–3 years’ experience in vector control, entomological surveillance, or related research.
    • Proficiency in mosquito sampling techniques and identification.
    • Experience in data analysis (e.g., R, Python, Stata, or equivalent statistical software).
    • Experience conducting fieldwork in challenging environments.

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of malaria vector ecology and control methods.
