About Mazingira Alliance for Community and Conservation (MACCO)

Mazingira Alliance for Community and Conservation (MACCO) is a Non-Governmental Organization officially registered in Tanzania (NGO/R1/0037). MACCO is based in Mang’ula, Kilombero District, Morogoro Region. The organization’s core focus is biodiversity conservation, specifically within the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania. MACCO executes a range of impactful projects spanning biodiversity research, monitoring, and community conservation, supported by a payroll of 28 permanent staff as of 2025.

The Role

MACCO is seeking an exceptional and visionary Managing Director (MD) to guide the organization through its next phase of growth and success. As a senior executive, the MD will play a pivotal role in collaborating with the CEO and the Senior Management Team to shape MACCO’s strategy, provide effective daily oversight, manage critical stakeholder relationships, and ensure the achievement of all financial and organizational goals.

Key Objectives and Responsibilities

I. Strategic Leadership and Governance

  • Strategy Definition: Define and drive the organization’s long-term strategy, ensuring alignment with its vision and short-term objectives.

  • Compliance: Ensure comprehensive regulatory compliance with all relevant laws and governance practices in Tanzania.

  • Executive Collaboration: Work jointly with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board to review, approve budgets, manage resource use, and make critical decisions on strategic planning and operational improvements.

  • Risk Management: Provide leadership and guidance in addressing organizational challenges and making key decisions in collaboration with executive and advisory boards.

II. Operational Excellence and Financial Management

  • Operational Oversight: Oversee overall organization operations, ensuring efficiency, productivity, impact, and scalability across all conservation and community programs.

  • Financial Control: Lead the organization’s financial management, including optimal resource allocation, cost management, rigorous budgeting, forecasting, and transparent reporting.

  • Contract Management: Review and manage contracts, partnerships, and grant awards in close collaboration with the CEO and Board.

  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Supervise effective monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of project outcomes to ensure organizational transparency and accountability to donors and stakeholders.

III. Stakeholder Relations and Team Development

  • Relationship Management: Build and maintain high-level relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, partners, government institutions, and local communities.

  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a high-performing leadership team to drive operational excellence. Manage senior leadership and departmental heads for smooth coordination.

  • Talent Management: Oversee the recruitment, training, and development of senior management to ensure robust succession planning and long-term staff retention.

  • Culture: Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement aligned with MACCO’s values and mission.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related field.

  • Senior Leadership Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in senior leadership roles, ideally within the international development sector in a similar capacity.

  • Sector Knowledge: Experience managing medium-scale projects focused on conservation and community development, preferably in Tanzania or East Africa.

  • Financial Acumen: Deep knowledge of organizational operations and financial management, with proven ability to manage budgets efficiently.

  • Strategic Capability: Proven experience in strategic planning, business development, and organizational management.

  • Tanzania Governance: In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and governance practices for NGOs in Tanzania.

  • Track Record: A track record of successful organizational growth and accountability.

  • Leadership Skills: Exceptional leadership, decision-making, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.

Additional Desirable Skills

  • Experience in conservation, development programs, and research.

  • Expertise in crisis and change management and organizational development.

  • Strong professional network.

  • Fluent knowledge of oral and written English and basic knowledge of Swahili.

  • Familiarity with MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning) systems and results-based management approaches.
