Location: Bulyanhulu Gold Mine
Contract Type: Permanent
Department: Fatal Risk Management
Reporting to: Fatal Risk Management Superintendent
Position Overview
Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is seeking to recruit eight (8) Fatal Risk Control Verification Officers across the following risk domains:
- Process
- Mining
- Engineering
- MRM / TSM
- Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
This position is a field-focused assurance and verification role responsible for confirming that fatal-risk critical controls are present, applied correctly, and functioning effectively under real operating conditions. The Officer conducts planned and ad hoc verifications, gathers factual evidence, identifies ineffective or cosmetic controls, and escalates any non-compliance or exposure that could lead to a Material Unwanted Event (MUE) or fatality.
The role works under the direction of the Fatal Risk Management Superintendent and spends most of the time in the field observing work, testing critical controls, engaging with frontline personnel, and reporting verification findings. Although the role does not “own” the risks, it ensures visibility of gaps, supports close-out actions, and provides accurate data to drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Critical Control Field Verification
- Conduct planned and ad hoc verifications of fatal risk critical controls as per defined performance criteria.
- Observe and compare “work as done” to procedures, bowtie controls, and standards.
- Identify gaps between documented requirements and actual field execution.
- Engage supervisors, operators, and contractors to validate understanding and proper application of controls.
2. Evidence Collection and Quality Assurance
- Collect clear, auditable evidence (photos, interviews, permits, readings, checklists, etc.).
- Distinguish between mere compliance and actual control effectiveness.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and traceable verification records within approved systems.
3. Escalation of Non-Compliance and Exposures
- Immediately report any failed controls or fatal-risk exposures to the relevant supervisor and the Superintendent.
- Initiate stop-work actions where exposures are uncontrolled.
- Track findings and follow up with control owners until corrective actions are verified as effective.
4. Auditing and Control Effectiveness Support
- Provide field evidence and insights for Level 1 and Level 2 assurance checks.
- Support Level 3 independent audits by preparing evidence packs, explaining field conditions, and demonstrating how controls are applied.
5. Control Owner Coaching and Support
- Provide feedback on competency gaps or systemic issues to the Superintendent.
- Highlight areas requiring training, coaching, or role clarification.
6. Reporting, Data Integrity, and Governance
- Capture verification outcomes in approved systems, including control status, evidence, and severity.
- Provide timely summaries on what was verified, gaps identified, and improvements noted.
- Contribute to monthly dashboards and quarterly governance reports.
7. Continuous Improvement and Learning
- Identify recurring control failures or weak signals and recommend improvements.
- Integrate incident and near-miss insights into future verification planning and sampling.
- Propose enhancements to checklists, prompts, and verification techniques.
8. Alignment with Culture, Values, and Fatal Risk Standards
- Demonstrate commitment to Barrick’s Fatal Risk Standards in daily decision-making.
- Encourage a speak-up culture and support workers who raise control-related concerns.
- Act as a role model for prioritizing “controls before production.”
Qualification Requirements
- A trade qualification or relevant certification in mining operations or processing.
- A degree in engineering or related field is an added advantage.
Experience and Skills Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience working on mining sites, preferably in developing countries.
- Strong understanding of fatal risks and critical control effectiveness.
- Ability to operate effectively within a culturally diverse workforce.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- A confident, self-driven individual capable of addressing constructive conflict when required.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation package including bonuses and site-specific benefits.
