Position Overview

Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is seeking to recruit two (2) Auto Electrician and Automation Foremen (Expatriates). This role provides leadership and advanced technical oversight for auto electrical systems, automation/control systems, and specialized high-voltage (HV) electrical systems on underground mobile equipment.

The Foreman ensures safe, efficient, and reliable maintenance operations while supervising a team of electricians and technicians. The incumbent drives compliance with mine safety standards, optimizes equipment availability, and ensures maintenance activities are planned and delivered cost-effectively within BGML policies, procedures, and operational targets.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership, Supervision, and Workforce Development

  • Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop a team of Auto Electricians, Automation Technicians, and HV Electricians.
  • Allocate and prioritize daily, weekly, and major repairs to ensure efficient resource utilization.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, performance reviews, and deliver continuous feedback to the team.
  • Foster a safety-driven, technically competent, and collaborative team environment.
  • Coordinate schedules, shift rotations, and manpower to support 24/7 operational demands.
  • Drive national workforce development and skills transfer initiatives.

2. Safety, Compliance, and Incident Management

  • Enforce strict compliance with Barrick safety standards, mine acts, electrical regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Ensure correct application of LOTOTO, PTW systems, arc-flash procedures, and full PPE usage.
  • Conduct routine safety audits, workplace inspections, and hazard assessments.
  • Lead or support incident investigations (RCFA) and implement corrective actions.
  • Promote and manage HV safety training, including emergency and rescue procedures.

3. Advanced Technical Oversight and Troubleshooting

Provide specialist technical support in the following areas:

Auto Electrical Systems (12/24V DC):

  • Lighting, starting/charging systems, wiring harnesses, vehicle electronics, radio and communication equipment.

Automation & Control Systems:

  • PLCs, HMIs, network diagnostics, sensors, control logic, data acquisition, and advanced mobile equipment automation.

High Voltage (HV) Systems:

  • HV power distribution, VFDs, large electric motors, transformers, switchgear, cable testing/termination/splicing.

Additional technical responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the correct use of diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, thermal imagers, hippo testers, and OEM software.
  • Supporting complex troubleshooting to minimize diagnostic time and maximize equipment availability.
  • Overseeing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance across all electrical systems for LHDs, jumbos, haul trucks, shotcrete machines, and ancillary underground equipment.

4. Planning, Reliability, and Resource Management

  • Work with Planning and Reliability teams to develop, schedule, and prioritize maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure timely requisitioning of spares, tools, and electrical materials.
  • Manage OEMs, external contractors, and specialists on diagnostics, warranty claims, and system improvements.
  • Provide input to budget forecasting, resource requirements, and cost control.

5. Reporting, Documentation, and Performance Monitoring

  • Maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records within the CMMS.
  • Generate detailed reports on electrical performance, equipment issues, and improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor and optimize key performance indicators, including MTBF, MTTR, availability, and maintenance backlog.

6. Continuous Improvement and Technology Advancement

  • Identify opportunities to improve reliability, maintainability, and performance of electrical and automation systems.
  • Recommend emerging technologies, diagnostic tools, and automation solutions relevant to underground equipment.
  • Support implementation of system upgrades, modifications, and OEM best practices.
  • Stay updated on new electrical codes, automation trends, and technologies such as battery-electric vehicles.

7. Environmental Stewardship

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Provide OEM feedback that supports product improvement and sustainable operational practices.

Qualification Requirements

  • Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent recognized electrical trade qualification/license.
  • Specialized training or certification in High Voltage (HV) safety, operations, and maintenance.

Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Minimum 5–8 years of progressive experience as a qualified electrician in mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • At least 3–5 years of proven leadership or supervisory experience, preferably underground.
  • Experience working in remote locations.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with Sandvik equipment is required.
  • Strong technical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting ability across auto electrical, automation, and HV systems.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills.
