The key purpose of the Dry Side Operator is to efficiently and safely operate equipment related to grain handling, storage, and preparation in a malting facility. This role primarily focuses on dry-side processes, including the receiving, cleaning, and storage of grain, while ensuring that it meets quality standards before it enters the malting process. The Dry Side Operator works closely with the rest of the operations team to ensure a seamless transition from grain handling to the malting processes.

Key roles and responsibilities:

Grain Receiving & Storage

  • Monitor and operate equipment for receiving grain deliveries (e.g., truck unloading, conveyors, and augers)
  • Ensure proper grain storage, managing silo levels and maintaining accurate inventory records
  • Identify and report any issues with grain quality or delivery

Grain Cleaning & Inspection

  • Operate cleaning equipment (e.g., grain cleaners, air systems) to remove impurities from the grain
  • Inspect grains for foreign materials, moisture content, and overall quality
  • Monitor and record grain conditions such as temperature, moisture, and any potential contamination

Handling & Conveying

  • Ensure smooth operation of conveyors, augers, elevators, and other grain handling equipment
  • Troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on equipment to prevent downtime
  • Ensure proper flow of materials to storage bins and ensure that grain is directed to the appropriate location in the facility

Equipment Maintenance & Safety

  • Perform routine checks and maintenance on grain handling equipment to ensure it is in good working order
  • Report any mechanical issues or concerns to maintenance staff
  • Follow safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective

Quality Control & Compliance

  • Adhere to quality control standards and ensure that the grain is handled according to the facility’s specifications
  • Maintain accurate records of grain shipments, quality checks, and inventory management
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards, including HACCP and other food safety protocols

Communication & Coordination

    • Work closely with other operators, supervisors, and departments to ensure that grain handling is coordinated effectively with the rest of the malting process
    • Report on the status of grain storage, cleaning, and preparation processes during shift changes and at regular intervals.
    • Participate in team meetings and contribute to process improvement discussion

Key attributes and competencies:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot equipment
  • Knowledge of grain quality standards and handling practices
  • Attention to detail and good record-keeping skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Basic computer skills for inventory tracking and reporting.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and environments (dusty, noisy, etc.)
  • Willingness to work in shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

Minimum requirements:

  • National Diploma or equivalent in engineering
  • N6 Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/Industrial)
  • Technical certifications or vocational training in agriculture, milling, or food processing is advantageous
  • Prior experience in grain handling, milling, or malting operations is preferred
  • Experience in operating automated grain processing equipment is an asset
