Position Overview

Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is seeking to recruit a highly experienced Mining Manager (Expatriate). The role is accountable—together with the Mine Planning Superintendent—for the management, supervision, and active participation in all mining activities, ensuring compliance with international mining regulations and company standards.

The Mining Manager is responsible for safe, efficient, and cost-effective underground operations. This includes continuous improvement of mining practices, optimization of ore extraction, management of mobile assets, and fostering a safety-driven culture aligned with industry best practices and Barrick’s corporate values.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic, Operational, and Financial Management

  • Prepare and manage annual and periodic mining budgets for operations and capital projects.
  • Report cost variances and financial risks in a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement mining strategies and plans that support optimum ore extraction.
  • Review and optimize all aspects of the technical services department to enhance value and shareholder returns.

2. Reporting and Stakeholder Communication

  • Provide written, verbal, and operational reports as required by management and stakeholders, including government authorities.
  • Participate in management and operational forums to meet targets related to resource extraction, capital management, cost control, environmental compliance, and governance.

3. Leadership, Development, and Performance Management

  • Provide leadership, supervision, coaching, and skills training aligned to employee Progress and Development Plans.
  • Foster strong two-way communication and effective teamwork across departments.
  • Create an environment that supports employee growth through structured training and mentoring programs.
  • Implement localization and performance management initiatives to enhance workforce capability.

4. Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement

  • Establish systems to collect, validate, and analyze mining performance and planning data.
  • Act promptly to correct cost, productivity, and labour variances.
  • Support improvements in ore reserve understanding, reserve optimization, and best-practice mining standards.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives across mining operations.

5. Safety, Compliance, and Governance

  • Ensure all mining activities comply with safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies.
  • Provide leadership and motivation to ensure all employees and contractors adhere to operational procedures and safety requirements.
  • Support corporate governance objectives and contribute to building a safe, productive, values-driven workplace.

Qualification Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or an equivalent discipline.
  • Advanced qualifications in mining, mineral economics, management, or related fields will be highly regarded.

Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in underground hard rock mining, with a strong track record at the Chief Mining Engineer level.
  • Recent experience in the gold mining industry.
  • Demonstrated experience across multiple mining jurisdictions, methods, and organizational structures.
  • Strong conceptual and analytical thinking, able to convert complex ideas into actionable strategies.
  • Proven ability to work with culturally diverse teams, with excellent communication and mentoring skills.
  • Strong understanding of ore reserves, reserve optimization, and underground mining best practices.
  • Experience conducting management presentations and delivering consulting-level insights.
  • Exposure to remote site operations, developing country environments, and talent development programs.
  • Solid financial acumen, including budget development, project evaluation, and investment analysis.
  • Broad knowledge across multiple mining-related disciplines: Mining Engineering, Geology, Surveying, and Geotechnical Engineering.
