Temeke Municipal Council was established on 10th November, 1999 under the Local Government (Urban) Authorities Act. 1982 No. 8 section 8 and 9. Temeke Municipal is the one of municipal councils of Dar es Salaam city at Tanzania, other municipalities are Kinondoni, Ilala, Ubungo and Kigamboni. Temeke is lies in the southern part of Dar-es-salaam Region,. it consist of two (2)divisions, (Mbagala and Chang’ombe), thirty (23) wards and and 142 Sub wards/Mitaa. Before that time Dar es Salaam City and Coast Region constituted a single region known as Coast Region Later on, the region was further subdivided into two Regions namely Coast region and Dar es Salaam region.
Temeke Municipality is one of the few rich and historic councils that has contributed to political, economic and social change in the country. In general, Temeke has been a hub for the independence of mainland Tanzania, as well as for the growth of sports, culture and agricultural development in the city of Dar es Salaam.
Temeke is one of the districts that carries the City of Dar-es-Salaam, how, Dar-es-Salaam is Temeke as the port is located in Temeke, all the national football stadiums – National Stadium and Uhuru Stadium, also located near the Airport international, is the beginning of the Tazara Railway, has an international exhibition ground – sabasaba, has the Nyerere bridge which is international. Fish is abundant in Temeke, has beautiful white sand beaches, has many residents and migrants who find areas to build due to having large open spaces. It has a large network of paved roads. According to the 2012 Census, its population is 1,368,881 out of which 699,825 women and 669,056 men. Geographically Temeke covers an area of 240 square kilometers after the division and birth of the new Kigamboni District. To the east, Temeke is bordered by the Indian Ocean, to the south is Mkuranga District and to the south is Ilala District on the central railway line.
